- Common salt after extraction from the sea, lake or underground deposits typically consist of crude lumps or granules which contain, in addition to sodium chloride, sand, mud, moisture, other salts and organic matter. This crude salt is generally off-white or yellowish-brown in colour, This salt is unhygienic, and hence poses health hazards if taken in this form. Further, this salt provides challenges to salt iodization program.
- The success of salt iodization depends primarily on the quality of salt to be iodized. Moisture and impurities in salt tend to destroy its iodine content. So mixing iodine compound with salt is not the solution. Salt has to be refined and dried to enable it to retain the iodine content put into it. So refining and drying ensure.
- Iodine content in edible salt
- Purity and Hygiene
- Convenience in usage as it becomes free flowing
- Good visual appearance because of dryness and whiteness
- Because of the above reasons, the business of refining and iodizing of common salt is growing all over world with an accelerated pace.
- The concept of salt being used as a carrier for imparting iodine is being extended to impart other micro nutrients and tasty flavors & ingredients. Only refined and dryed salt is capable of carrying and retaining such ingredients and flavours.
- Refining of salt is also essential for its use as raw material in industries. Use of dried refined salt in place of dirty and unhygienic solar salt in industries, like, food processing, cattle feed, oil drilling, fish processing, textile, detergent, dyes, chemicals and others, enhances quality and appearance of their products.
- Washed Raw salt from your Raw salt washery stock pile will be fed into Vertical Bucket Elevator through a vibratory feeder. Vertical Bucket Elevator (VBE), will discharge salt into a Wet Mill. Crushed salt is subjected to upgradation in a multi-stage cleansing system which comprises of a series of special design vessels, like, Elutriation Tank, Washing Tank, Thickener, etc. These are integrated with devices for continuous reduction in load of sand and grit in the salt slurry. The lighter insolubles drift away with the over flows. These cause improvement in both the physical and chemical attributes of common salt. Salt, thus upgraded, is then subjected to centrifuging and blending with crystal habitat modifiers and Potassium Iodate solution. The blended salt is then fed in a continuous type Fluidized Bed Dryer. The feed material and hot air come in contact with each other and drying takes place. The exhaust air carries the moisture removed from the product away. Dried product is collected at the bottom of the other end of the FBD. The exhaust gas is passed through cyclone separator for recovery of salt fines. Fine salt is separated and collected at the bottom.
- Dried salt is graded in Vibro Sieving machine. Oversize crystals are crushed in Pin-mill or in roller crusher as per the requirement and routed back in the system through the fluidized bed dryer. The salt crystal having sizes mostly between (-) 850 to (+) 150 microns are mixed in a Blender with suitable quantity of additives including a free flowing agent and conveyed by means of Screw Conveyors to packaging machines for being packed in consumer packs. The crystal size of (-) 150 microns, collected from the dryer cyclone, are packed in laminated HDPE bags in 25 / 50 kgs lot. Magnetic separators are provided at various stages of processing for removal of iron particles.
- The spent brine, collected after washing of salt is sent to settling pond where it is regenerated on removal from it the excess load of calcium, magnesium & insoluble impurities. The brine thus improved is used again for upgradation of the common salt

Black salt is made by melting a mixture of common salt, charcoal along with small quantities of harad seeds, aamla, bahera, babul bark, etc., Salt melts at 801 0C, though other ingredients melt at a much lower temp. On melting, salt and other ingredients make a homogeneous coloured solution. Allowed to cool, the solution transforms into a hard coloured crystal. This is called black or coloured salt.
Present method of making black salt dates back to ancient times and is extremely cumbersome. Common salt after getting mixed with additives, is poured into an earthen pot. A number of such pots are placed in a make shift coal fired furnace. It takes nearly 5 - 7 hours in completion of melting. On melting, the insoluble impurities settle down at the bottom of the pot. Subsequently, the fire is extinguished and molten mass is left for cooling for very long hours. On cooling the earthen pots filled with solid salt, are broken and the solid mass is taken out. Insoluble impurities accumulated at the bottom of the solidified mass are separated from the main body of rock salt with the help of hammer and chisel. The main body of rock salt too is broken into small pieces with the help of hammer. The whole operation is labour intensive, cumbersome, arduous and time taking.
Voice Engineers, in keeping with its tradition of innovating process technologies, has developed a path breaking process for manufacturing black salt. The development has taken several months and more than a dozen trials. It was a big challenge. But we finally succeeded in developing a modern state of art mechanized black salt plant.
The process involves mixing of salt with other ingredients, their melting, solidifying and pouring of the black salt from the pot.
Advantages over the traditional process:
- Our black salt plant ensures
- Just a couple of operators and workers.
- Drastic reduction in production time.
- Lower energy consumption
- Convenience.
- Better and uniform quality
- Higher production
- Acceptable level of emission
- Lower cost of production

- A plant which produces vacuum salt and mineral water together has great potential.
- Packaged pure drinking water has caught the fancy of the consumers. The product has a double digit growth. With the increasing preference for health and hygiene and the realization that purity of water is key to a healthy living, the market for the product is in a high growth vortex. The supply situation of the standard product is so pathetic that at public places, even bottled tap water is going as pure drinking water. There is dearth of proper processing and packaging facilities. This indicates a huge potential for a scientific and hygienic mineral water plant. Packaged mineral water is a premium product which fetches much higher price than pure packaged drinking water.
- On the other hand, pure and iodized edible salt has already become darling of the masses. It has been patronized by rich and poor alike. Last two years has witnessed unprecedented growth in the demand of refined salt.
- It is human to seek differentiation and improvement in all aspects of life. Ordinary salt has given way to refined salt. Similarly, refined salt is bowing out in favour of vacuum salt. Consumers are already aware that vacuum salt is purest form of salt. That is why Tata vacuum salt and Nirma vacuum salt, the only two vacuum salt plants in India, are the front runners in the market. In the U.S., Europe and in all other developed countries, vacuum salt is the only type of salt which is recognized as edible grade. This is because, it is made by evaporating pure and filtered salt solution whereas a refined salt is an outcome of grinding and washing of raw solar salt by saturated brine. In the latter process, it is not possible to make salt completely free of sand, grit and other insoluble and soluble impurities. This aspect of vacuum salt is a differentiating point for the conscientious and discerning consumers.
- Presently, the availability of vacuum refined salt in India is a mere 15-20% of the total demand of edible salt. It is seen to be increasingly patronized because the price difference between vacuum and refined salt at retail level is negligible.
- The process of making vacuum salt, simultaneously generates distilled water which can be converted into mineral water. For every tonne of vacuum salt produced, nearly 2500 litres of potable mineral water is generated. So, the cost of making vacuum salt is shared also by mineral water. The two products put together make vacuum salt project, a great money spinner. This makes the payback period less than 2 years.
- This process involves continuous evaporation of salt solution by passing steam into it and condensation of vapour for recovery of useful water. For economizing the steam consumption, multiple units are used in series, so that the vapour generated from one unit, be used in the next effect for effecting the evaporation, thus eliminating the need for generation of fresh steam. This process is continued for a number effects, so that the every kg of steam generated for the first effect produces a number of kgs of vapour from the succeeding effects. Vapour from the last effect is condensed in a condenser using water from cooling tower. The entire plant is initially under vacuum, and thereafter the pressure in the entire system is thermodynamically stabilized. Vacuum is generated by using a suitable vacuum pump. The number of effects depends upon the capacity of the plant, so that optimized economy is achieved at minimum investment.

- In most part of the developing world, exhausted lead batteries are manually broken for separating out its various components. This causes serious health problems for the labour engaged in this operation.
- So, off late, various governments have put a ban on manual breaking of these batteries. However, the manual breaking operation continues surreptitiously. Voice Engineers comes with an automatic battery breaking plant for attending to this serious issue,
- The process involved are to first separate acid and hazardous battery paste, followed by
- cutting and pulverizing of the plastic and lead parts. These are then subjected to hydrodynamic separation method in which lighter plastic parts float on the water surface and are sucked out from there. The heavier lead parts settle down at the bottom from where they are removed by means of suitable conveyors and elevators. The plastic parts are dried and pulverized for making them suitable for reuse. Lead parts are sent to lead refining plants. The process is continuous and can be handled with the help of just a few operators and labours.
